The purpose of Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) is to encourage neighbours to look out for each other’s properties and to report crime or anti-social behaviour in their area.
Everyone who joins NHW plays an important part in making their neighbourhood a safer place to live and to assist households from becoming victims of crime.
Anyone can join Neighbourhood Watch and everyone can play a part in its achievements. When a group of households join NHW, they form an individual Street Scheme which meets the needs of the members and their individual neighbourhoods. A Street Coordinator is established to act as a contact link with the Local Policing Team and other Neighbourhood watch contacts.
You can either join an existing scheme (if already running in your street) or you can volunteer to become a street scheme co-ordinator for your area. Alternatively you can get in touch with the village co-ordinator and ask to join the general mailing list to be kept up to date with Neighbourhood watch matters.
Being a co-ordinator for a street scheme does not need to be an onerous task. Many co-ordinators ask for their neighbours’ email addresses and send out information by email, particularly as this is the how the Police send all their alerts. If you do run a group and register your street scheme, you and your members become eligible for a discount of up to 20% on their home insurance. You can also install official NHW signs in your street.
